What Is Lifestyle?
The term “lifestyle” has many definitions. For example, one can describe it as the way we feel we belong to a culture, or as the means we use to reach a life goal. Depending on how we use this term, lifestyle can be a sense of superiority or inferiority, a way to find meaning in our relationships, or it could also mean an active and celebrity lifestyle. However, no single definition can explain all the differences in a culture, so let’s take a closer look.
Various social researchers and writers have used the word “lifestyle” to define what is healthy and what is not. Alfred Adler first used it to describe the basic character of an individual, as well as their morals and values. Later on, the concept was used by researchers to refer to the way they dress and consume food and entertainment. This term is often associated with a particular region or a certain type of culture. In addition, lifestyles have been used to describe the different activities that individuals engage in, and how they spend their time.
A study conducted in Quebec, Canada, looked at the association between lifestyle and diseases. Noncommunicable diseases, or NCDs, account for 40 million deaths annually and constitute 70% of all deaths worldwide. These diseases are chronic in nature, arising from a combination of factors. Among the most common types of NCDs are cancer, cardiovascular disease, and chronic respiratory disease. Moreover, lifestyle factors have a strong correlation with NCDs.
