What Is a Lifestyle?

lifestyle

A lifestyle is a typical way of life and reflects the personality of an individual or group. Lifestyle is expressed through a variety of factors, including the person’s behavior, attitude, interests, and appearance. According to Alfred Adler, lifestyle is a way of compensating for feelings of inadequacy. This lifestyle is acquired in childhood and is shaped by the individual’s upbringing, genetic endowment, and interpersonal relations within the family.

A lifestyle is defined as the pattern of thought that accompanies a person’s behavior. Once separate from the concept of taste, the term “lifestyle” has acquired a contemporary definition that reflects increased visibility on social media. As sociologists, we have learned that capitalism is a system of supplying things to people that nobody likes, but instead relies on consumers liking them. The rise of the consumer-driven economy has contributed to the emergence of a lifestyle concept as a result of this phenomenon.

In the 1950s, the concept of lifestyle was first used to refer to the way people think and behave. The Austrian psychologist Alfred Adler conceived of a lifestyle as a “characteristic of the individual,” a basic social value or system of judgment. Milton Rokeach further refined the concept of lifestyle as a set of values that correspond to different parts of a society. This concept was later applied to the global marketplace, where lifestyles were marketed to consumers.
