What Is Lifestyle?
According to the dictionary, lifestyle is defined as the set of interests, values, attitudes, and behavioural orientations that determine an individual’s identity. Alfred Adler introduced the concept of lifestyle in a 1929 book, which later became the basis for the phrase “way of life”. The term lifestyle refers to a set of intangible factors that shape an individual’s personality and relate to a range of personal values, outlooks, and demographic variables.
Lifestyle is often correlated to health, as evidenced by the World Health Organization (WHO), which estimates that 60% of health outcomes are related to a person’s lifestyle. This reflects a wide range of unhealthy habits that can lead to illness, disability, or even death. In addition to these, lifestyle also reflects a person’s views on politics, religion, health, and intimacy. To be considered a lifestyler, one must adopt certain behaviors that will contribute to the well-being of their family and friends.
A good example of such an unhealthy lifestyle is alcohol consumption. Alcohol can contribute to breast cancer in women who consume three or more drinks per week. The risk increases with each subsequent drink consumed daily. While alcohol consumption is generally considered safe for people with no alcohol abuse issues, the benefits of moderate alcohol consumption should not be underestimated. Besides drinking moderately, a healthy lifestyle also includes physical activity and eating a healthy diet. Moreover, lifestyle reformation should be part of a person’s plan to keep their weight healthy.
