What Is Lifestyle?
The term “lifestyle” was first used in 1929 by Alfred Adler, though Weber’s writings were not translated until after Adler’s. In The Science of Living, Adler says, “Lifestyle is the way that we mould ourselves according to the environment we are in.” In other words, our lifestyle is what we make of our experiences. For example, a pine tree will grow differently depending on the weather and soil it grows in. In this way, we have two different lifestyles, each of which we can describe.
A lifestyle can be defined as a person’s preference for certain aspects of life, whether it’s work, sports, religion, or fashion. Lifestyles are closely related to one another, and can even affect our relationships and self-identity. The pursuit of interests and values is a big part of what defines a lifestyle. Whether or not we feel satisfied with our lifestyle depends on several factors, including where we live and what kind of people we know.
As a consumer, the notion of a lifestyle is very complex. In the past, the terms lifestyle and style were distinct, but the rise of social media has transformed both concepts. People use social media to express their tastes, and many are now public figures. Mark Fisher argued that the concept of lifestyle is intertwined with the notion of conspicuous consumption in the media. And even more so, lifestyle is used to underpin major social and political debates.
